Add to basketArtistic Context & Overview A fine late Mughal miniature, c. 1880?1890, showing a royal or noble couple in a romantic embrace beneath a canopied pavilion, set in a lush garden with a central fountain and layered landscape. The scene exemplifies the Awadh/Lucknow style?combining Indo- Persian lyricism with refined pictorial detail and calligraphic panels. Visual/Technical Description Painted in opaque watercolor and gold on a reused Persian manuscript leaf, this miniature features delicate facial work, fine detailing in the costumes and jewelry, and a richly patterned carpet. The garden?s fountain and the trellis work enhance the scene?s sense of intimacy. Framed by floral spandrels, the painting is bordered above and below by Nastaliq poetic text. Material/Manuscript Context Executed on a recycled Persian manuscript page; the reverse contains handwritten Persian/Urdu script in black ink, with visible signatures and notations?likely related to account, correspondence, or legal matters (some numbers present, including what appears to be a date line). This hybrid material use is typical for North Indian ateliers of the period. Condition (Summary) Front is vibrant with little to no flaking, edges only lightly abraded. Reverse is toned and fully legible, with minor creasing at corners. No repair detected. Provenance / Significance Produced in a provincial atelier for elite or merchant patrons; the integration of literary text and miniature painting reflects high 19th-century Indo-Persian taste. Visible script and possible date/signature on reverse increase scholarly and collector value. Translation & Analysis (front and reverse) Front (Persian/Urdu, Nastaliq): Top panel: 1. That face, truly the light of the heart?s garden, 2. By God?s grace, union with such beauty brings nobility, 3. Arrived at the abode of paradise, with purity and eloquence, 4. In this sea of beauty, the Lord of art bestows peace. Bottom panel (right to left): 1. The water of life is inscribed within this heart, 2. A single companion is felt no less than the soul itself, 3. The breath of love?s art is still in struggle, 4. That love?s color is made as if a new spring flower is born. Reverse (Persian/Urdu): Multiple lines of Nastaliq script. Possible year noted: '1295' (ca. 1878 AD, Hijri). Additional notations/signatures; no clear full patron or artist name. Conclusion A beautifully preserved late Mughal miniature, combining lush courtly romance with poetic calligraphy, painted on a Persian manuscript leaf with visible 19th-century Persian notations on the reverse. Estimated date c. 1880?1890 (possibly 1878 if reverse date refers to the painting), value $1,600.
