284 Pages. Reprint of a 1951 Heinemann publication. Very slight spine cock and a hint of age-tannning to top page edges. Dust jacket price $14.95 is unclipped. Hig on a rocky outcrop above heathland stands a Victorian gothic mansion, built by the ancient and aristocratic Rose family. In the lodge of the house live the last two of the fading line. Rosalba Rose, at 17, has always been dutifully submissive to her ferocious 80 year old great-aunt martine, who is wedded to the past and only concerned with the family lname, Rosalba's life with her great-aunt contains little pleasure and no companionship. Eugene Seale, artistic, but embittered from a deprived background, is doing his national service in the army. One day Rosalba watches him swimming in a secluded pool on the old estate and later they meet. For Rosalba, love awakens her; while the solitary Eugene finds renewal and fresh hope. Eugene and Flo Derrick, a friend of Rosalba's, help to organise a take-over of a ruined army camp by homeless families. Battle is joined with the authorities. American servicemen are drafted in, among lthe homesick Budge Fetterbrand, weary of 1950's England, yet lending his support to the cause. A showdown is inevitable as old and new collide. A novel that explores profoundly human emotions in a country community during an era of great social change. Contents in Seven Chapters: Rosalba, Eugene, Two Lost Children, Flo, Budge, Four Lost Children, Judgment Eve, and Judgment Day.…
