“God – is the Mormon church true?”
This is the question Eric T. Hansen asked in three prayers over his lifetime.
The answers to the first two prayers were the same. The third prayer was different …
Eric T. Hansen grew up in a traditional Mormon home in Hawaii and was a believer – he even went on a two-year mission for the church to Germany.
It was there he began to doubt.
It wasn’t so much the strange secrets of Mormonism – the charming but fraudulent life of Joseph Smith or the contradicting facts of polygamy – the real problem came when he recognized how the church used guilt and manipulation to make him a willing slave to dogma.
He knew he had to leave. And he did.
But there is a twist:
Years later, living in Germany as an established writer, he looked back and was surprised at what he saw:
Not just the manipulation and dependency – his reasons for leaving – but also many things he still loved and admired:
– the church’s brilliant and uniquely American contributions to Christian theology,
– or the lost sense of purpose and belonging that comes with having a strong faith.
Though he could not go back, he knew there would always be a hole where his faith had once been.
You’ll love Losing My Religion because it’s …
– the true, warts-and-all story of one member’s struggle to be free of Mormonism,
– a surprisingly informative and fair look into the historical and practical workings of the church, and
– an authentic and heartfelt reflection on the value of spirituality.
