Hardcover. In May 2017, AlanPickering won the award for the 'Greatest Single Contribution to OccupationalPensions (19982017)' at the Professional Pensions UK Pension Awards. It was awell-received tribute to the role he had played for more than twenty years. ThePickering Report, commissioned by the Blair government, had been a blunt, brutallyhonest and pragmatic assessment of what needed to be done if Britain'sleadership position in occupational pensions was to be maintained. In this biography, PaddyBriggs, who worked closely with the subject, focuses on the world of pensions and Pickering's leading role in it. But the story isbroader and more human than the highly technical world of retirement benefits.Pickering is a baby boomer who grew up in modest circumstances in the City ofYork. As a child, he was diagnosed with a degenerative eyesight disease, and by his twenties he wastotally blind. His disability became more of a spur to ambition andaccomplishment than a restraint. This included athletic achievements such asrunning marathons and being a serious participant in competitive race walking. He has reached the highest levels in the world of financial services and alsobecame a well-known racehorse owner and a vice-president of the RacehorseOwners Association.Look Where You're Going has unique insights intopolitical decision-making in an area which was, and is, a political football. But above all it shows how one man's intellectual power combined with a specialskill in building relationships, pushed disability to one side and enabled himto succeed. Look Where You're Goin g has unique insights into political decision-making in an area which was, and is, a political football. But above all it shows how one man's intellectual power combined with a special skill in building relationships, pushed disability to one side and enabled him to succeed. Review
This enjoyable and shrewd book tells the story of an extraordinary individual and in doing so also explains what has happened to pensions in Britain over the past forty years. --David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science 2010 14
Alan Pickering is one of the few people in the world of pensions who combines an understanding of the final detail with a sense of the big picture. As Pensions Minister I was always grateful for Alan s wise counsel, and am pleased to see this account of his life and work. --Sir Steve Webb, Director of Policy, Royal London and Pensions Minister 2010 15
