Item description from seller

Large 8vo in maroon slipcase; pictorial boards, lettered in white on spine; pp. xviii + (ii) + 412, incl. index; plates, incl. monochrome and colour photographs. Near-fine condition. "In June 1940 . [the] straggling remains of the defeated British Expeditionary Force in France had limped back across the Channel, leaving their dead, their wounded and those taken prisoner, as well as most of their weapons and equipment, behind on the beaches of Dunkirk. . The Long Weekend, with its suggestion of leisure, of breathing space, of years out, is bookended by war. It starts with the Armistice: it ends with Hitler's failure to accept the British ultimatum to withdraw German troops from Poland, and the Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's declaration at 11.15 on the morning of Sunday 3 September 1939 'that consequently this country is at war with Germany'.".…
