Long Vowel /ō/ Phonics Workbook - oa and ow is a Science of Reading aligned phonics workbook for Grades 2-4 that helps students master the long vowel sound /ō/ using the oa and ow spelling patterns.
Created by an Orton-Gillingham-certified teacher and grounded in structured literacy, this workbook provides explicit, systematic instruction so students can decode and spell long /ō/ words with confidence.
This long vowel /ō/ workbook targets two key spelling patterns: oa (as in boat, road, coat) and ow (as in snow, low, grow). Through clear, step-by-step activities, students learn to recognise these patterns, read them accurately in text, and use them correctly in spelling and writing.
Inside this workbook, students will practise:
-Word lists for both oa and ow spelling patterns
-Say-Tap-Map-Write phonemic awareness activities
-Read and write practice with long /ō/ words
-Word sorts separating oa and ow patterns
-Colour and trace activities to reinforce long /ō/
-Find and circle long /ō/ words in context
-Scrambled words to strengthen spelling and pattern recognition
-Word searches featuring oa and ow words
-Sentence writing with long /ō/ words
-A decodable fill-in-the-blank passage for connected text practice
These activities follow structured literacy and Science of Reading principles, giving students repeated, focused practice with long vowel /ō/ in both isolated words and connected text. Students build phonemic awareness, decoding accuracy, orthographic mapping, spelling confidence, and reading fluency.
Ideal for:
-Grade 2 and Grade 3 phonics instruction
-Grade 3 and Grade 4 struggling readers who need long vowel support
-Homeschool phonics curriculum
-Science of Reading classrooms
-Reading intervention and RTI groups
-Orton-Gillingham phonics lessons
-Tutors and parents supporting early and intermediate readers
Long Vowel /ō/ Phonics Workbook - oa and ow gives teachers, reading specialists, and families a clear, systematic way to teach long /ō/ spelling patterns within a Science of Reading framework.
