Synopsis:

An evocation of life at sea in the 18th century which also offers comment on the nature of story-telling and the making of a myth. Translated from the Swedish by Tom Geddes.

Review: Rich, old and almost alone, Long John Silver sits in Madagascan exile and broods on the past; both Jim Hawkins and Daniel Defoe tricked and libelled him and for once he is going to put the record straight while there is time. There is a price on his head and soon they will come to collect ... Larsson intelligently uses one of the most famous of fictional pirates as his mouthpiece in a book which tries to reconstruct the classic pirates of the Caribbean; mutiny followed by piracy was for many of them the only possible way out from the intolerable abuse of life on British ships. Silver has been an honest man and ended up shanghaied, and falsely accused of mutiny--if he becomes a monster and the account of what he does to the man who costs him his leg is pretty much emetic, how can his crimes weigh against the slavery and brutality from which supposedly good men profit? Larsson knows both the fictional and documentary record of the pirates of the Spanish Main; he makes particularly intelligent use of the biography of Captain England. He knows his stuff and, more importantly, he knows why he cares about it. --Roz Kaveney

Condition: Near Fine. U.S.A.: Harvill Press, 1999. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A clean unmarked copy. Long John Silver is living out his twilight years on Madagascar. He has a price on his head, and the Royal Navy is looking to bring him to justice. But what obsesses him most is the fear of posthumous obscurity, and this motivates him to pen his memoirs. Bjorn Larsson's Long John Silver is compelling and attractive, a treacherous and anti-authoritarian figure, driven by pride and a sense of fairness. He tells of his life as a smuggler and of working the Caribbean slave ships; of his years as quartermaster to the rum-soaked brute Captain Flint; and, finally, of his meeting with Daniel Defoe, with whom he watches the hanging of pirates at London's Execution Dock. But this is no mere sequel to Treasure Island. Larsson takes Robert Louis Stevenson's story as his basis and reinvents it, bringing the most complex and powerful character to the fore. Long John Silver is not only a beautifully textured evocation of eighteenth-century seafaring life but also a witty, absorbing, and allusive comment on the making of a myth. 400 pp. Seller Inventory # 005809
