"The Logic of Chemical Synthesis" is the first book to deal systematically with the fundamental principles of synthetic problem solving. It is the result of the development of a new and original way of thinking about chemical synthesis and more than twenty years of experience in the use of this approach in the teaching of chemical syntheses at Harvard University. Part One outlines the concepts of retrosynthetic analysis and the strategies for generating synthetic pathways by systematic reduction of molecular complexity. This approach to chemical synthesis provides a framework for simplifying synthetic problems. The second part contains information on many specific syntheses planned by retrosynthetic analysis and demonstrated in practice. It discusses the concurrent use of several strategies to solve problems and contains integrated information of synthetic pathways used for the construction of target molecules. Part Three provides a comprehensive guide to the synthesis of complex organic molecules. It contains structures of more than six hundred molecules which have been synthesized along with references to the relevant literature. Although the book deals almost exclusively with molecules of biological origin, which are ideal for developing the fundamental ideas of multistep synthetic design due to their architectural complexity and variety, the approach taken is fully applicable to other types of carbon-based structures. It defines strategies to guide the discovery of synthetic design using retrosynthetic planning. It bridges the gap between the level of knowledge attained after the first course in organic chemistry and the frontier of research on the synthesis of potentially useful molecules.

The Logic of Chemical Synthesis The title of this three–part volume derives from a key theme of the book–the logic underlying the rational analysis of complex synthetic problems. Although the book deals almost exclusively with molecules of biological origin, which are ideal for developing the fundamental ideas of multistep synthetic design because of their architectural complexity and variety, the approach taken is fully applicable to other types of carbon–based structures. Part One outlines the basic concepts of retrosynthetic analysis and the general strategies for generating possible synthetic pathways by logical reduction of molecular complexity. Systematic retrosynthetic analysis and the concurrent use of multiple independent strategies to guide problem solving greatly simplify the task of devising a new synthesis. This way of thinking has been used for more than two decades by one of the authors to teach the analysis of difficult synthetic problems to many hundreds of chemists. A substantial fraction of the intricate syntheses which have appeared in the literature in recent years have been produced by these individuals and their students. Part Two, a collection of multistep syntheses, provides much integrated information on synthetic methods and pathways for the construction of interesting target molecules. These syntheses are the result of synthetic planning which was based on the general principles summarized in Part One. Thus, Part Two serves to supplement Part One with emphasis on the reactions of synthesis and on specific examples of retrosynthetically planned syntheses. Part Three is intended to balance the coverage of Parts One and Two and to serve as a convenient guide to the now enormous literature of multistep synthesis. Information on more than six hundred interesting multistep syntheses of biologically derived molecules is included. It is hoped that the structural range and variety of target molecules presented in Part Three will appeal to many chemists.

If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

Effects of cancellation

If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or Skihills Books, SUN PRAIRIE, Wisconsin, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of cancellation

The right of cancellation does not apply to:
