Print on Demand. This book scrutinizes ancient historical sources to establish the nature of the common source employed by ancient historians Livy and Polybius in writing about the Punic Wars. The author focuses on Livy, showcasing the development of his methods as he progressed from the literary style of his early work to the more pragmatic, annalistic, and Polybian-influenced approach of his later books. The analysis of the content and style of Livy's writing reveals a discernible transition in the historical narrative, particularly in his coverage of Scipio's campaigns in Spain and Africa, where Polybius emerges as the primary source. The author's examination sheds light on the historiographical methods of Livy and provides valuable insights into the ways in which ancient historians utilized and adapted their source material. This study expands our understanding of the complexities of ancient historical writing and its reliance on common sources, especially in the context of the Punic Wars. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
