From the Author: Psychotherapists on society
I am writing as one of the editors. This book has been woefully ignored in both popular and professional press, but whenever it appears at conferenes people buy it. The title is one problem - we should have called it 'Psychotherapists on Society' which is what it is. People who read it find it full of good things, with people like Susie Orbach, Dorothy Rowe, Bob Hinshelwood, Andrew Samuels, Valerie Sinason, Barry Riachrds, Eric Miller and others giving their personal responses to the questions 'What is it like to live in today's society?' and 'What would make our society a better place to live?'. It is full of good things for the thoughtful reader. Here are quotes from some of the book's contributors.

Susie Orbach 'We no longer have a consensus about what constitutes parenting, mothering, fathering.....For the word family to make sense it must transform itself from the site of ideology to a place of secure attachment for all its members.'

Valerie Sinason 'The more we are able to look into the experiences of pain, loss and perversion and deal with them the stronger we will become. A strong society will understand that it is damaged but can acknowledge its scars.'

Barry Richards 'In making the link between Brookside and the British Association for Counseling I am suggesting that the psychotherapies are part of a broad cultural trend...A morally toned concern with feelings is an intrinsic part of popular culture.'

R D Hinshelwood 'One of the prime causes of our difficulties is that so much of politics is done as if someone was looking in from outside....we can do nothing about the fact that human beings are passionate - however rational they might also be.'

Dorothy Rowe 'Psychotherapy has not transformed the world or even a small part of it because in seeking to understand ourselves we fail to be scientific.'

Andrew Samuels 'My claim is that there's everything to play for provided the men and women of vision access their reserves of realism and the men and women of realism access their reserves of vision.'
