Vol.1- Frontispiece, vi, 578 pp, Vol. II- frontispiece, vi, 558 pp., Vol. III- Frontispiece, 520 pp. and Vol. IV-xxx, 521pp. 6 folding maps with a few old professional repairs. John Campbell began writing histories in 1719 but it was this major work which became the major work of the rise of the British fleet, and with a continuation down to the year 1779, including the naval transactions of the late war, and an account of the recent discoveries in the southern hemisphere ; written under the inspection of Doctor Berkenhout. Uniformly bound in a newer 1/4 calf over beige cloth, raised bands with compartments lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed, tiny chip to head of volume two. A very nice, clean set lacking only one frontispiece in volume four. Seller Inventory # 031120
