From the Author
Hi! Welcome and thanks for stopping by! I'm the author(or compiler, should I say?) of A Little Kinder Than Necessary - A Collection of Character-Building Secrets; a self-published work that was introduced to the market in November 1998. I want to invite you to read on and learn a little bit about why I decided to pursue this project. The following "Thoughts from the author..." appeared in our local paper a few months ago and serve as a good explanation of the book: Children need to witness the good examples of their parents and others if they are to learn valuable interpersonal skills; "skills" such as compassion, confidence and responsibility. Reinforcing your good examples with written works (and illustrations) is a simple way to promote discussion and understanding of such values. Since they were tiny, I've encouraged my children to be "a little kinder than necessary" - toward themselves, each other and others. When they were babies, I began recording some of my own values and observations, as well as a variety of quotations that I hoped to pass along to them in letter-form when they were older. That collection became my book, A Little Kinder Than Necessary, which underscores the importance of courtesy, good manners and integrity. The quotations were chosen for their straightforward language and thought-provoking wisdom and are suitable for everyone - children and adults, alike! I think you'll agree that Joyce Orchard Garamella did a terrific job of interpreting the words and providing a clear, lighthearted touch with her cheerful illustrations! Your young reader may interpret the words in a completely different way and should be encouraged to discuss what he/she sees in the pictures or understands in the words. The questions, "What does this mean to you?" and "What would you draw if you wanted to illustrate this point?" are two excellent ways to draw out a child's or student's ideas about the book's content.
As I embarked on this project, I found that self-publishing even a "little" book like this can be a huge undertaking! It was, and continues to be, a challenging journey and a terrific learning experience made all the more worthwhile by the pride my children have shown in it and by the wonderful reception it's received by the book-buying public! It's a little book with BIG thoughts! I hope you enjoy it, and remember...
Kindness is Contagious!
