From the Author
"Lip Service: George Bush's 30-Year Battle with Conservatives" was written during the 1992 campaign, but it examines important issues that the Republican Party and the conservative movement continue to face.
Expanding on op-ed pieces (written with Richard A. Viguerie) that appeared in The New York Times, the book focuses on Bush's role in the decades-long struggle between the country club and populist wings of the Republican Party. In her review, Helen Thomas of UPI called the portrait of Bush "devastating." Garry Wills, in The New York Review of Books, called the book a "vehement polemic."
"Lip Service" explains how George Bush lost the support of many conservatives and, as a result, lost the 1992 election.
I was a senior editor of Conservative Digest magazine, which in the 1980s was the semi-official magazine of the conservative movement, and I was a Reagan delegate to three Republican National Conventions. "Lip Service" reflects my belief that President Bush squandered the political legacy of Ronald Reagan.
I am often asked if this book was an "attack" on President Bush. Not really. Many times since "Lip Service" was published, people who served in the Bush Administration have told me that President Bush would have been reelected if only he had read this book and followed its prescriptions.
As Republicans and conservatives argue about the best direction to take in the years to come, I hope they will read "Lip Service: George Bush's 30-Year Battle with Conservatives" and take its argument to heart.
