Print on Demand. This book delves into the intriguing world of linear ordinary differential operators of the second order. Building on the foundational work of mathematicians like Hermann Weyl, the author explores the behavior of these operators in a way that goes beyond the traditional Sturm-Liouville problem. The analysis extends to complex-valued functions, challenging the conventional understanding of these operators and their applications in fields such as electromagnetic theory. The author investigates the spectral properties of these operators, introducing concepts like "limit point" and "limit circle" cases, and dissecting the significance of boundary conditions. This book stands as a testament to the ongoing quest for deeper understanding within the realm of mathematical analysis, particularly as it relates to differential equations and their diverse applications. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A precise meaning will be assigned to the operator (l) in section two for the case when q(x) is real valued, and this will later (section four) be extended to complex q(x). For real q(x) two situations arise depending on the function q(x). In the limit point case there is only one possible interpretation for L and that is independent of a/b L is self-adjoint with a real spectrum. In the limit circle case, L has a pure point Spectrum which lies in the upper half-plane for Im [cl/b] 0 and in the lower half-plane for Im [cc/b] 0. We show by example that in this case the spectrum need not be confined to a strip parallel to the real axis.
