Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth reconstruction of the trial that launched the legal career of Abraham Lincoln. It began when a man named Duff Armstrong was accused of murder. Lincoln took the case, and his clever questioning of a key witness, combined with his presentation of an almanac that contradicted the witness's testimony, resulted in Armstrong's acquittal. The book analyzes Lincoln's brilliant use of the almanac as evidence, raising questions about whether it was genuine or a clever fabrication by Lincoln to save his client. It explores the ethical implications of this tactic and its significance in the legal world. The book also provides a detailed account of the events leading up to the trial, the broader historical context, and the personalities involved. The author offers insights into the complex legal and moral issues raised by the case, examining the nature of justice, the role of truth, and the limits of legal procedure. This book is a valuable resource for students of American history, law, and literature, as well as anyone interested in Lincoln's early career and the complexities of jurisprudence. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Biography and Autobiography
Shortly after the above encounter, Lincoln became a member of the Armstrong family. The family then lived three and a half miles north of Petersburg, Menard county, two or three miles from the Sangamon river, near Concord church. Here the future president made rails, studied surveying, and helped the farmers of the neighborhood with their work. Mrs. Armstrong would often tell of having foxed Lincoln's trousers with deer skin, so they would better sustain the rough usage to which they were subjected in his surveying trips, through tall prairie grass, timber and brush, which he travelled through in establishing the lines of the lands of the early settlers.
