Inside the president’s shadows: a firsthand account of protecting Lincoln
This gripping memoir offers a close, day‑to‑day view of the Seventh Independent Company guarding Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. It blends observations of the president’s habits with military detail, showing how guards worked, what dangers they faced, and how ordinary moments offered rare glimpses of the man behind the office.
The narrative weaves together personal anecdotes about Lincoln’s routines, the White House security, and key events that shaped the era. You’ll meet Tad Lincoln, see how the guard responded to fire, and glimpse Civil War politics through the lens of those on duty. The book also captures tense moments when threats loomed and loyalty was tested, all from the perspective of the soldiers who stood watch. What you’ll experience
- A vivid, first‑hand portrait of daily life guarding the president in 1863–1865
- Close observations of Lincoln’s character, habits, and moments of quiet humanity
- Recounts of dramatic incidents and near‑misses that highlight the era’s dangers
