About this Item
Signature of W. E. Burton, Bookplate of C. Leslie Allen & Viola Allen. Interesting provenance. This copy was owned by three important members of the American Theater. Burton (18804-1860) was born in England, and acted in English theater until he emigrated to Philadelphia in 1834. In 1837, he founded the Gentleman's Magazine, and hired Edgar Allen Poe as co-editor. He sold his share in 1841, and began managing theaters. He assembled a magnificent Shakespearean library at his estate at Glen Cove, Long Island. He was an important figure in the American theater in its infancy. C. Leslie Allen & his wife Viola were American theatrical performers at the turn of the century. George Lillo (1693-1739) was a London playwright & jeweler noted for his "commoner" tragedies. 2 vols, large 12mo, 312pp & 242pp, uncut. Early half brown gilt morocco, marbled boards, a good + copy, front hinge cracked but holding. OCLC: 12530933. Seller Inventory # 8708
