An old woman becomes a child in the rain, small hands pressed flat on a cistern lid, holding it down while her brother strikes the wood from underneath - three times, then once, then not again. She feels the love. She feels the hate. She feels the lid jump under her palms. She never had a brother. And the memories leave marks.
