About this Item
Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904) was an English poet and journalist, who is best known for this work, 'The Light of Asia', which was 1st published in 1879. It was written to acquaint the people of England with the Buddhist religion. Written as a poem of eight books in blank verse, it was widely popular, often printed and translated into various languages. From this work, the Western popular culture derived its' view of Buddhism. The poems 'After Death in Arabia' and 'She and He' are also included in this volume. Full plate B&W illustrations signed Charles A. Cox throughout. Without further information, an artist by that name lived 1839-1901 and was active 1875-90 in U.S.A. No illustrator was cited for this copy within the copy. Last few pages highlight other products (some promoted as 20th century) available from Union School Furnishing, Inc. of which the publisher is a subsidiary. Hardcover has burgundy cloth boards with black spine and gold lettering on spine, but no DJ & loss of over 80% of spine. Although the body of the text is tight, the covers are barely attached, held on by threads. Interior is tight, mostly clean (moisture at spine-ends with some handling smudges) and unmarked. No copyright, publication nor printing dates or history given. Author's preface dated July, 1879 included. By 1888, there are some existent copies indicated to be from the 49th edition! Combined with information above, I estimate this copy is from circa 1905. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 007065
