1961 abridged edition of The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud by Ernest Jones, edited and abridged by Lionel Trilling and Steven Marcus, with an introduction by Lionel Trilling. Published by Basic Books, New York. This single-volume edition condenses Jones's monumental three-volume biography (1953-1957), written by Freud's close associate and official biographer. Long regarded as the foundational biographical study of Freud's life, intellectual development, and the emergence of psychoanalysis, the work remains a central reference in the history of psychology and modern intellectual thought. Hardcover in original two-tone cloth boards (tan and black). No dust jacket. Boards clean with light shelf wear; spine lettering bright; binding tight; interior clean and unmarked. A solid, attractive copy of a landmark twentieth-century biography in psychoanalytic history.
