In the early 50s the junior Senator from Wisconsin tore the United States asunder with a campaign he stumbled upon almost by accident. Many Americans, including those in high places, feared his accusations and his wrath out of the mistaken belief that he was a demagogue like Huey Long or even Hitler, not realizing that Long and Hitler both had programs, and Joe McCarthy's only true program was himself.
