As with all books written by Charles James Apperley (1778-1843), The Life of a Sportsman was published under the nom-de-plume "Nimrod." According to Higginson (p.52), Apperley was "unquestionably the greatest hunting correspondent of all time." Hand N87. See Higginson/Smith 400. See Hardie 186. Top edge gilt. Original maroon cloth. Original Cloth. Condition: Fair. Henry Alken (illustrator). First published 1842, this edition 1874. 6½ x 10" pp. viii + 400 with 38 hand-coloured plates. Fair in blind stamped red cloth with gilt image of a horseman on front board and gilt lettering to spine. Boards stained and rubbed with a section of the spine missing. Binding weak, several pages taped in, but the book is intact. Final leaves missing. Text is mostly clean with just a few smudges and stains. The majority of the illustrations by Henry Alken are bright and clean - quite remarkably so. In detail I would categorize 28 as very good+, 8 good, 1 fair, and 1 poor. 20 plates have tissue guards.
