Red cloth with dull gilt lettering. Bump to head and heel of slightly darkened spine. Scuffing and minor soil, small white marks to front board. Contents pages show light warping to top edge from moisture, text is otherwise clean and bright, no marks. Half title has small tear from being roughly opened. This is the fourth volume of five books structured around five phases of reason: common sense, society, religion, art, and science. Santayana argues that reason is an evolutionary development, emerging from instinct and rooted in the natural world, rather than being an inherent quality of existence. Examining art's origins in instinct, its rational refinement, and its social/moral functions, blending naturalism with classical philosophy to trace art from practical crafts to fine arts like music and poetry, influencing modern thought by grounding ideals in material reality.
