Then a discovery buried in old hospital records threatens everything they thought they knew.
Questions surrounding Isabel’s birth lead to an almost impossible conclusion. On the day she was born, something went wrong inside the hospital. Two newborn girls left with the wrong families.
The other girl is Grace.
Raised by Anna Whitmore, Grace has grown up in a different home, with different memories and a different understanding of who she is. But Anna had once questioned whether something had happened at the hospital. Her concerns were never fully resolved, and years later the truth she suspected begins to emerge.
What starts as a search for answers quickly becomes something far more difficult. Daniel and Mara must confront the existence of the biological daughter they never knew, while facing the terrifying possibility that acknowledging Grace might somehow diminish the daughter they have loved for fifteen years. Isabel must reconcile the parents who raised her with a mother she never had the chance to know. Grace, meanwhile, is forced to decide what family means when the people she belongs to suddenly extend far beyond the life she has always known.
As old records are examined and forgotten decisions reconstructed, the families begin to understand how an ordinary sequence of human errors could alter the course of multiple lives. There is no simple villain and no conspiracy waiting to be uncovered, only mistakes, assumptions and consequences that continued long after the people responsible had forgotten them.
Yet discovering what happened may prove easier than deciding what should happen next.
Because children cannot simply be returned.
Parents cannot erase fifteen years of birthdays, arguments, school mornings, holidays, disappointments and love. Biology can reveal where Isabel and Grace came from, but it cannot decide where either girl now belongs.
Caught between grief for the lives they should have lived and love for the lives they actually have, two families must find a way forward without asking either girl to surrender part of herself.
At its heart, The Exchange is not a story about two babies who were given to the wrong parents. It is about what happened during the fifteen years that followed.
Emotional, intimate and deeply human, The Exchange explores identity, parenthood, loss and belonging, asking a deceptively simple question:
When everything you believed about your family turns out to be wrong, what is it that still makes you family?
