Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Toru Dutt, an extraordinary Indian poet who died at the young age of twenty-one. Her life, though brief, was filled with remarkable achievements, including mastering Sanskrit and writing beautifully in French and English. The author delves into Toru's early life, her family history, and her pivotal journey to Europe. This journey exposed her to new cultures and sparked her love for French literature, later evident in her own work. The book explores the complex relationship between Toru's upbringing in Calcutta, where she was immersed in both traditional Indian culture and the influence of English education, and her development as a writer in a distinctly Western literary tradition. It also delves into Toru's personal relationships, particularly her deep friendship with Miss Martin, an Englishwoman who became a confidante and literary companion. Through Toru's letters and the author's meticulous research, we gain insight into the creative process of a gifted poet navigating diverse influences and pushing the boundaries of what was possible for an Indian woman in the late nineteenth century. The book reveals how Toru's unique voice, nurtured by her multi-cultural background and nurtured by both Eastern and Western literary traditions, makes her a fascinating figure in the history of literature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Among the poets whom the gods have loved there are, surely, few more remarkable than Toru Dutt. Writing in a foreign language, seeking her models in a foreign literature, interpreting a foreign religion, she built up in three years an eternity of fame. In an Introductory Memoir prefixed to Toru's Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan, Mr. Edmund Gosse wrote in 1881 If Toru Dutt were alive, she would still be younger than any recognized European writer, and yet her fame, which is already considerable, has been entirely posthumous.' The great French critic James Darmesteter says other: This daughter of Bengal, so admirably and so strangely gifted, Hindu by race and tradition, an Englishwoman by education, a Frenchwoman at heart, poet in English, prose-writer in French who at the age of eighteen made India acquainted with the poets of France in the rhyme of England, who blended in herself three souls and three tradi tions, and died at the age of twenty (sic), in the full bloom of her talent and on the eve of the awakening of her genius, presents in the history of literature a phenomenon without parallel.'
