"Life and Letters of Sir Edward Mortimer Archibald, K.C.M.G., C.B. : A Memoir of Fifty Years of Service" is a comprehensive biographical account of a distinguished British diplomat whose career spanned critical decades in the nineteenth century. Authored by Edith Jessie Archibald, this work draws upon a wealth of personal correspondence and official records to provide an intimate look at a life dedicated to public service within the British Empire.

The memoir chronicles Archibald's extensive professional journey, from his early years in the legal and administrative circles of Newfoundland to his influential long-term tenure as the British Consul-General in New York. Through his letters, readers gain firsthand insight into the diplomatic tensions, political shifts, and international relations of the Victorian era, particularly the evolving relationship between Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. Archibald's career provides a unique lens through which to view major historical events, including the diplomatic complexities surrounding the American Civil War and the development of colonial governance.

This volume serves as both a detailed character study of a dedicated civil servant and an important historical resource for those interested in diplomatic history, colonial administration, and the biographical legacies of the British Atlantic world. It is a vital record of a half-century of steadfast service and administrative excellence.
