Three volume set (book one followed by two 'Continuations'). While there are no chapter headings, many pages have printed comments/descriptions in the margins (image); presumably to aid comprehension in a work which is collectively nearly a thousand pages long. It is 'written by himself,' taken from 'his ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPTS, given to the UNIVERSITY of OXFORD by the Heirs of the late EARL of CLARENDON.' The period of English history covered is from 1609 (the year of his birth) to his final banishment from England in 1667. (NB. The following comments apply to all three books; unless stated otherwise). Caramel coloured cloth boards with gold gilt titles and bands along the spine. The front boards display a faded patch in the top third (possibly a shadow from a former paste in - see main image and note comment about library paraphernalia below). Top edges stained brown. Binding: firm, but in volume one - the front board, while still joined to the bookblock at the rear, has become loosened at the front revealing a gap between the book and its front board (image). Book 3 has a vertical tear between the front board/spine hinge: <100 mm. Internally, the books are moderately tanned with occasional spotting. These phenomena are more apparent on the books' preliminary and final pages, especially the title pages - see image. (The latter shows the title page of volume one). The bands of tanning are quite marked but this level of tanning is exceptional and tends not to feature elsewhere. It is possible that these three volumes have been rebound at some point. (The grey endpapers are not made of laid paper like the rest of the publication). Each book has a small adhesive label stating: Bound by Woolstencroft, King Street, Warrington. The three volumes are ex-library: Warrington Circulating Library. All three have a scarcely visible embossed roundel on the title page (and on the first page where the main text begins).
