Item description from seller

A beautiful, one-of-a-kind handmade book by Cipe Pineles (1908-1991), the renowned Austrian-born graphic designer and art director who oversaw during the course of her remarkable career the art departments of Seventeen, Charm, Glamour, House & Garden, Vanity Fair and Vogue. As the first female art director at a number of these magazines, Pineles enjoyed a groundbreaking, even an historic rise in the design and art worlds. Examples of her own work --specifically her handmade books-- rarely come onto the market but, when they do, they show a delicacy and a whimsy, outdone only by the obvious talent that comes through in her brushstrokes. This first known handmade book of Cipe's, called "My Life with the Crown Prince: An Expose That Names Names", was created in 1940 and wonderfully celebrates, as does her next handmade book (1942's "Oh It's Nice to Be Married") her partnership with her first husband, William Golden (himself a star in the graphic design world, having designed the CBS "eye" logo). While war was brewing in Europe, the young couple had romance and travel more on their mind and the book is essentially a charming combination of travelogue, musings on food, New York and family, and whimsical lists of likes and dislikes and to-dos. Awash in vibrant color throughout, with Cipe's keen eye reflected in vivid hues, in this case gouaches. Thick octavo, solid and VG in its oatmeal cloth, with even most of the fragile handpainted paper dustjacket preserved. (The front cover of the jacket, its spine and its 2 flap-folds still in place, the flap-folds loosely so, The rear cover of the dustjacket is gone). A diamond in the Cipe Pineles canon, one of only 5 handmade books to have survived and to have emerged from her estate. …
