About this Item

A Very Good plus copy in beige cloth binding with red title band in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with chipping to the spine and edges. This first-person account of life as a 19th Century seaman was originally published in 1822, but in the intervening years none of the charm and immediacy of Nicol's account has been lost. Nicol's narrative of his 25 year job as a ship's cooper takes the reader around the globe twice, on three voyages to China, two to Egypt, twice around the Horn and the length of the East Coast of the Americas .
