Item description from seller

Antique 1900 Testimonial Edition – Limited & Numbered Copy The Library of Historic Characters & Famous Events Volume XI – J.B. Millet, Boston (1900) This is not a common reprint or later encyclopedia volume—this is an original 1900 Testimonial Edition, limited to only 1,000 numbered copies, and this copy is hand-numbered No. 507. A true turn-of-the-century collectible, published at the height of fine bookmaking, scholarship, and illustration. 🔹 WHY THIS VOLUME IS SPECIAL ✔ Testimonial Edition (scarcer than standard trade editions) ✔ Hand-numbered limitation – only 1,000 copies produced ✔ Lavishly illustrated with photogravure plates ✔ Published in 1900 – over 125 years old ✔ Edited by prominent historians & scholars ✔ Exceptional historical scope covering Europe, America & beyond 📖 CONTENTS HIGHLIGHTS (Volume XI) This volume focuses on major world figures and pivotal historical events, including: William the Silent Charles I & II of England The Great Fire of London Voltaire & Rousseau Edward Gibbon Daniel Boone Chief Justice John Marshall The Treaty of Ghent The Dred Scott Decision Sam Houston The Opening of Japan Confucius Ignatius Loyola …and many more landmark figures and moments A serious reference work, not light reading—ideal for historians, collectors, libraries, and display. 🖼️ ILLUSTRATIONS & PLATES Includes fine photogravure illustrations based on: Paintings by renowned artists Authentic historical portraits Original photographs (notably rare for books of this era) These plates were an expensive, high-end printing method, reserved for premium editions. 🎯 Why Collectors Want This Authentic 1900 publication Limited Testimonial Edition to just 1,000 copies Illustrated photogravure plates after great artists and authentic portraits Sturdy cloth binding Gilt spine titling Several uncut pages Thick, deckle-edged pages Heavy, thick paper stock with age-toned edges Scholarly editorial oversight Broad, classical historical scope Ideal for collectors of antique history books, decorative libraries, or academic reference This volume is hand-numbered “507” in red copy pencil on the limitation page, consistent with early 20th-century publisher or bookseller practice. Condition Antique hardcover volume in overall good, original condition for its age (circa 1900). Original blue cloth binding remains intact and firmly attached, with expected age-related wear, including surface rubbing, fading, and scattered spotting, discoloration, light staining. The front cover and rear cover show age-appropriate wear including spotting and slight discoloration The spine is intact with legible gilt titling, though rubbed and worn from age. Front hinge/gutter shows splitting, affecting the cover only (not a text leaf). Binding remains structurally sound, but these areas shows honest wear typical of well-preserved antiques. Page edges are deckle-cut/untrimmed, uneven by design, with age toning and natural roughness consistent with early 20th-century production. Pages are complete, with no missing text. Interior shows light foxing, age toning, and occasional small edge tears, primarily at the margins. Localized moisture staining is present along the inner margin on several pages (see photo). No major stains within the text. Overall Impression This volume presents as an honest, unaltered survivor, retaining its collector authenticity. While it shows expected wear from age and use, it has not been over-restored or altered, which many collectors prefer. 📌 Condition reflects originality and historical character rather than modern perfection.…
