Print on Demand. This book examines the historical development of Indiana's libraries, exploring their evolution from humble beginnings to the diverse and dynamic institutions they are today. The author traces the establishment of Indiana's first libraries in the early 19th century, their growth during the township library movement, and the subsequent decline due to a lack of funding and support. The book also sheds light on the emergence of vital library systems in the late 20th century, including the Indiana State Library, college libraries, and the flourishing public library networks in cities and towns. Through a comprehensive analysis of archival materials and statistical data, the author offers a rich understanding of the complex factors that influenced Indiana's library landscape over time, highlighting the significance of these institutions in fostering literacy, intellectual growth, and cultural enrichment. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This was carried into effect by a general law for the establish ment of county libraries in 1818, and there had been adopted, in 1816, a very good law for the incorporation of public libra ries in general. The two, with various amendments added in later years, covered the public library system of the State until' after the adoption of the Constitution of 1851. The county libraries thus established furnished the chief part of the books to which the Indiana public had access during the remainder of the first half of the present century.
