Reverend E. P. Powell wrote "Liberty and Life" in 1889, and it was added, as a reprint, No. 19 to the Unity Library in 1892, published by Charles H. Kerr & Co. Edwin Payson Powell, (1833 - 1915) was a graduate of Hamilton College in 1853, and an indefatigable proponent of the affinity of religion and science. He wrote many books and papers endeavoring to educate people as to the reality of both science, spirituality and faith. Powell was ordained a minister in the Congregational Church, and held pastorates in various churches around the country, including Chicago, Illinois, and Deansboro, New York. Powell would have been a neighbor, had we lived here during his time. He was a profound thinker, and his books guided the reader to a deeper attention. While Rev. Powell always had an eye to the advancement of scientific knowledge, one might also include his works within the realm of the Christian Social Gospel. In his brief Preface to this book, Powell said : "Evolution has brought us to face such new views of life, and of our responsibility as the finality of the animal kingdom, and inheritors of an eternal evolution of organic and functional power, that we must recast our views of sin altogether. Henceforth, if I do not mistake the drift, sin will be held to be not a personal affront to the Creator, but a course of action that degrades ourselves in either body or mind, and that tends to degeneration. We are placed in charge of ourselves by the fact of self - consciousness; and the sum of all duty is so to use ourselves as to be in every function, honest, wholesome, and regenerative. Liberty is not a power to act as we choose, but to live in fullest accord with Him in whom we live and move and have our being. This book is offered cordially to those who desire only that liberty which broadens and intensifies existence. It is in some sense supplementary to my book, 'Our Heredity from God'; and I am confident that readers of that volume will not misunderstand me." CONTENTS : * Life and Death, What they Are * Sin a Crime Against Life: Righteousness Obedience to Law * Sinning Against the Holy Spirit * A Sound Mind in a Sound Body * Is the Average Life Worth the Living? * The True, the Beautiful, and the Good * Not Allopathy nor Homeopathy, but Sympathy * The True Life * The Doing Creed * The Keys * A Bundle of Paradoxes * A Substitute for Orthodoxy * The Two Theologies * Natural Moral Compensation * Character * The Religion of the Future * New Year in 1982 SERIES : Unity Library (No. 19) TITLE : Liberty and Life AUTHOR : E.
