Its author, Libanius, professor of rhetoric in Antioch, was a notable literary figure of the fourth century A.D. He was a con-servative, pagan Greek, who would neither learn Latin nor adopt the new imperial religion of Christianity; a de-voted teacher, he practised his profession amid growing criticism in a time of rapid social, religious, and educational change, and his account of professional success and personal disappointment underlines a crisis in classical education and municipal society. His comments, made from an unusual standpoint, reveal the strength and weaknesses of his tra-ditional system and his own personality. The Autobiography may in part have been delivered orally to a select audience, but it was added to at various dates and the closing sections, the editor says, were probably written for himself alone as an old man's reflections on his career. As containing the Greek text with notes, this is an edition primarily for scholars and students, but as an autobio-graphy it has its interest for others and the English translation en face makes it easy for those whose Greek is rusty or non-existent.
