Item description from seller

2 volumes in one [as issued], pp xii, 142;[2], 155, [1], separate title page to volume 2, both half titles present, bound in contemporary plain polished sheep, red label, rubbed at joints and edges, short split to head of upper joint, second title page with a clean repairable tear and no loss, lightly browned as usual but a very good copy in original state, FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, reprinted from the first London edition of 1789. A popular conduct book of the period with a very moral tone, sequel to the same author's 'Strictures on Female Education' of 1780. Both works would in time fall foul of the growing enlightenment amongst female authors, but for their time Bennett's books were influential on both sides of the Atlantic. A recent cataloguer has described this edition as 'one of the earliest and most progressive titles on the subject to be printed in the young Republic. ' [with apologies].
