Print on Demand. This book contains the letters written home by William Henry Gilman, an American who traveled with Commodore John C. Long on an 1857-1858 voyage to the coasts of South America and the islands of the South Pacific. The letters vividly describe not just the journey itself, but also those areas and peoples encountered along the way. Gilman includes personal observations, social commentary, and reflections on the progress of nations, offering readers an intimate view of the period and the prevailing attitudes. From the warmth of Brazil to the chillier shores of Chile and up the coast of California, these letters capture the challenges and wonders of global exploration and discovery. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.
