Item description from seller

A perfectly serviceable set of five reference copies; nothing fancy, but complete copies and sturdy, if unlovely. Printed dust wrappers are tattered, rubbed and chipped, a couple of edges are split, several also price-clipped, though the books themselves are in easily Good condition and stand upright easily on the shelf. Bound in light tan paper over boards, burgundy cloth-backed, with gilt lettering to spines. Forward cocks to spines in each case, slight smudging to bottom tips. Else clean, tightly bound and unmarked of interior, quite bright, with notes, bibliographies and and indexes. Each volume replete with bright, distinct black-and-white photographs, captioned. Edited by Nibel Nicolson, with the assistant editorship of Joanne Trautmann. Imperial octavo hardcover formats, measuring 9 1/2" tall x 6" wide, respectively. Volume One, 1888-1912 (1975, First American Edition, First Printing, "B" in "number" line, with xxi [3], 1-531 pp.); Volume Two, 1912-1922 (1976, First American Edition, First Printing, "B" in "number" line, xxiv [4], 1-627 pp.); Volume Three, 1923-1928 (1978, First American Edition, First Printing, "B" in "number" line, xxii [2], 1-600 pp.); Volume Four, 1929-1931 (1979, First American Edition, First Printing, "B" in "number" line, xxi [1], 1-442 pp.); Volume Five, 1932-1935 (1979, First American Edition, First Printing, "B" in "number" line, xx [1], 1-476 pp.). The subject of these compendia of learned letter writing, Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) "was an English writer and one of the most influential 20th-century modernist authors. She helped to pioneer the use of stream of consciousness narration as a literary device" (Wikipedia). She commenced publishing in 1900 (!) but really came to prominence inter-war, publishing Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and Orlando (1928), A Room of One's Own (1929) and other classics. The five volumes cover her early life, interpersonal relations, career highs and lows, friendships with the literary lights of the day such as Vita Sackville-West, family structure (husband, nephew, niece, etc.) and then other members of the so-called Bloomsbury Group. A scholar's well-used set, from the personal library of the noted classicist, Peter Morris Green.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.…

Store description

Member, I.O.B.A. (the Independent On-line Booksellers Association) "Structure" versus "Agency." A phrase that has characterized much social-scientific debate. Does “structure” (the routinized regulations of kinship and marriage, work and reproduction, of race, class and gender) determine history, or is it the “agency” of fully conscious, independently acting, individuals? Structure, Verses, Agency Books isn’t going to solve the debate, but we’ll offer you lots of all three. Versus to verses—we specialize in fine, rare and collectible books, from the fine arts to the social sciences, from poetry to photography, from literature and ethnography to fine bindings and Americana. Structure, Verses, Agency Books…
