Item description from seller
Language: English. About The Book: The tragic love story of Abelard and Heloise unfolds through their 12th-century letters, capturing the reckless beginnings of their romance when Heloise became Abelard's pupil. The Letters of Abelard and Heloise, written in Latin, delve into their ill-fated love affair and subsequent monastic lives, providing insights into 12th-century European society. These letters, integral to Western Epistolary literature, are revered by historians and literary scholars, serving as primary sources on medieval gender roles, love, and monastic life. The preservation of their letters remains unclear, with 12th-century references, and cultural influences include Chrétien de Troyes, Jean de Meun, Chaucer, and Petrarch. About The Author: Peter Abelard (1079–1142), a medieval French philosopher, theologian, poet, and musician, is celebrated for his contributions to philosophy, ethics, and theology. Known as the "Descartes of the twelfth century," he's a forerunner of modern thinkers and a defender of women's education. He developed the concept of limbo and the moral influence theory of atonement. Abelard, a significant autobiographer, influenced later epistolary novels and law by emphasizing subjective intention's role in determining moral value and legal consequences. About The Translator: Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff MC (1889–1930), a Scottish writer and translator, gained fame for translating Marcel Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu into English, published as Remembrance of Things Past. He used the double-barrelled name "Scott Moncrieff." The Title 'The Letters of Abelard and Heloise written/authored/edited by Peter Abelard, Translator: C. K.
