Letter of the Greeks to Innocent III. This item is unavailable.Letter of the Greeks to Innocent III

The letter from the Greeks to Innocent III after the Fall of Constantinople to the Latins is conveyed by the Italian patriach imposed over the city. It implores the pope of the faith in Christ's transformative power, the call for unity through a unified synod, and their plea for a general council to decide on divine doctrines rather than on exclusive papal authority. Our authors express their readiness to migrate and their hope for mutual understanding, emphasizing the importance of respecting different opinions in matters of faith between the Catholic and Orthodox communions. In all likelihood this text was composed under the guidance and name of the Latin patriarch, but its content suggests that it only consented to by the patriarch, and was likely the theological opinion of those Greek bishops residing under the Frankokratia.
