About this Item
A Letter from Mr. Burke, to a Member of the National Assembly; In answer to some Objections to his Book on French Affairs. The Second Edition. Paris, Printed, and London re-printed for J. Dodsley, Pall-Mall, M.DCC.XCI. [1791] Paginates: [4], 74 p. Collates: (A)2, B-E8, F6. Todd 54e: First English Edition, second impression. Complete with half title. Uncut and stitched as issued. A remarkable tall copy. A postscript to Burke's, Reflections on the Revolution in France, it was issued first in Paris on April 27, where it was immediately pirated. On May 12 Dodsley announced that he had obtained a copy of the letter from Mr. Burke. That the issue was hurried along may be presumed by the figures, indicating here the employment of nine men. One man was replaced resulting in two states with Pg 28 first state, figure 6 and second state, figure 7. The later assignment continues to the next impression, Todd 54e, which except for the title is identical with later state of Todd 54d, the first instance in Burke of what has elsewhere been called a recurrent impression. In Todd 54e the press figures are identical to Todd 54d 2nd State with Pg. 28, figure 7. In the next impression, Todd 54f all the formes were reassigned, with different press figures. Bound as issued, uncut, with stitching. Marks to cover, archival tape reinforcing the title page edge, ink stain to top outer edge affecting the edges of a few leaves. Internally fine with little to no stains or marks. The last page remains unopened. The volume measures 227 x 145 mm or 9 x 5 ¾ inches. Seller Inventory # ABE-1697137103703
