Letter. Approx. 9.75" x 8." Folded. 4 pages with 2 pages of content. On the blank back page on this letter is the date March 21st, 1848. Letter addressed to "Col. Aaron Burr Fairfield Vermont" and includes a Boston Postal mark. Letter written by Josiah P. Cooke and covers some Cooke family history including the birth and deaths of 6 family members. Major Aaron Cooke emigrated from England in 1630. He became one of the first settlers of Dorchester and later Northhampton, Massachusetts. Letter in very good condition with light creases where folded. Boston red stamp on the address page. From Wikipedia: Josiah Parsons Cooke (October 12, 1827 September 3, 1894) was an American scientist who worked at Harvard University and was instrumental in the measurement of atomic weights, inspiring America's first Nobel laureate in chemistry, Theodore Richards, to pursue similar research. Cooke's 1854 paper on atomic weights has been said to foreshadow the periodic law developed later by Mendeleev and others.[1] Historian I. Bernard Cohen described Cooke "as the first university chemist to do truly distinguished work in the field of chemistry" in the United States.[2] Found in OCLC listing: Genealogy by Aaron Cooke: in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide.
