In this second instalment of the Angel series, Michael McDonald has lost track of the Magic Trick since it left his possession in 1976. The most amazing seven days of his life have left an indelible mark on who he is and his ambitions. After five years of searching, he is about to give up on his dream to write his greatest book of all time about the entity who lives inside the box of sand when his neighbor and friend, Eric Stoller, is discharged from the army.
Eric tells Michael a story about why he was discharged. It has to do with receiving the box of sand when he was at Check Point Charlie and how with the artifact's help, WWIII was stopped at the last second with he and his friend's help.
Eric's story is so unbelievable that in his telling, he revealed his cloak and danger encounters with Otto Koffman, a high ranking official of the feared Secret Police, called the Staatssicherheit, or Stasi. In East Berlin, the Secret Police are as ruthless as Hitler's SS force a generation earlier and willing to kill anyone to keep them from leaving Communistic East Berlin. His task to save a woman from being gunned down in cold blood and a baby who lost his parents due to the ruthlessness of Koffman, almost triggered the third world war.
Eric Stoller being detected in East Berlin to save an enemy of the state pulled in the Soviet Union pitting them against N.A.T.O. and the United States in what would have been a tank against tank war on a grand scale.
Eric's story is full of danger and death. To keep ahead of Koffman, Eric had to do many things he never thought possible to survive, including willingly standing before a firing squad using only his bravery as a shield while falling in love with the woman he set out to save.
Needless to say, Eric Stoller took his turn to experience the most amazing seven days of his life as death hunted him at every turn.
