Full contemporary calf. 16mo. 4 by 6 1/2 inches. 436pp. Illustrated with four full-page plates. Early American edition of this popular work originally published in Edinburgh in 1779. Scott was a teacher of "English, writing and accounts". This work went through twelve editions by 1799. It contains excerpts by Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, Dodsley and other writers. This copy is in a nice early American binding. The covers are rubbed and worn with some chipping to the corners and some wear to the hinges. The text is good with some spotting and soiling. There is some staining to the title page and first thirty pages of text at the left side. There is an early ink name on the title page and some early ink writing on the inside cover and rear blanks. Both rear blanks are chipped at the top and the first blank is cropped at the bottom. Seller Inventory # 10467
