Lesikar is known for combining solid content with a clear, accessible writing style. Because the authors continually participate in cutting-edge communication research Lesikar's, Basic Business Communication contains more current coverage than any other text in its field. More importantly, the writing style takes that knowledge base and transforms it into concepts students can read, understand, and apply.
The end-of-chapter problems and cases are the most heralded pieces of pedagogy in the Lesikar text. The extensive problems and cases allow professors to use different materials for different semesters of teaching. Also, new to the Seventh Edition, problems and cases have been structured to emphasize critical thinking. More than ever, students are asked to synthesize material, make practical applications, and project alternative outcomes.
Material discussing the technological aspects and implications of business communication is integrated throughout the text. The most obvious placement of this is in the Technology-in-Brief boxes throughout the chapters. However, content areas such as electronic mail systems are discussed in the body of the text as well.
Full-page examples of letters, short reports, and long reports are a signature of the Lesikar text. Different color papers with textures and designed letterhead add to the realistic look. Examples in the Seventh Edition also reflect the growing trend of business to add fax numbers and e-mail addresses to letterhead.
Margin notes, including handwritten annotations to letters and reports, are a valued pedagogical tool because they expand, not repeat, the material in the text.
A reorganized, shorter Table of Contents reduces the overall length of the book by more than 100 pages. The Seventh Edition contains 19 chapters, instead of 22. Combining two chapters that discuss basic patterns of business letters, two chapters that treat specific situations for business communicators and making the material on physical presentation of documents into a comprehensive appendix allow the instructor to cover the same material in a more economical fashion.
All new r¡sum¡ examples include a variety of formats with suggestions for people of various backgrounds. New graduates with part-time job histories, career changers, and returning students with professional experience will find a r¡sum¡ sample they can use. Information on electronic resumes is also included for the first time.
Computer screen shots that vividly illustrate each concept in four colors accompany Technology-in-Brief boxes. These are the most vivid examples of the updated and enchanced coverage of technology-assisted communication found throughout the book.
The greatly expanded package for the Seventh Edition is the most useful and effective ever assembled for a business communication textbook. Instructor's material includes a new Power Point presentation. New teaching notes and mini-acetate references enhance the instructor's manual. Test bank questions have been revised, and the quantity has been increased.
