Item description from seller

A MEDIEVAL PROVENÇAL ROMANCE FROM EXPATRIATE PARIS. A finely printed, limited-edition presentation of medieval Provençal romance, translated by Homer Rignaut and published in Paris by Edward W. Titus under his distinctive Sign of the Black Manikin imprint. 'The Legend of Ermengarde' draws upon the troubadour tradition of southern France, exploring the ideals of courtly love, chivalric devotion, and romantic longing. Attributed to the obscure Uc Saine, whose historical identity remains uncertain, the work reflects the renewed fascination with medieval European literature and its revival through the fine-press movement of interwar Paris. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: HAND-MOULDED PAPER AND LIMITED-EDITION PRINTING. +++ Original stiff paper wrappers folded over light card stock, with titles printed in red and black. Printed on heavy Montval Gris Rose hand-moulded paper. +++ 5.25 by 8 inches; [iv], vi, 16, [2] pages. +++ One of 250 numbered copies, with an additional 20 lettered copies. This example numbered 79. +++ The restrained typography, substantial handmade paper, and limited production reflect the bibliophilic printing practices associated with Paris private presses of the 1920s. CONDITION: A WELL-PRESERVED, LARGELY UNOPENED COPY. Near Fine. Minimal shelf handling, with light, even age-toning to the wrappers. Text clean and well preserved. All but one leaf remain unopened. An attractive, well-preserved example retaining its original folded wrappers, with all but one leaf unopened. LITERARY SIGNIFICANCE: EDWARD W. TITUS AND THE PARIS PRIVATE-PRESS MOVEMENT. Edward W. Titus was an American expatriate publisher and bookseller whose Sign of the Black Manikin imprint participated in the literary and bibliophilic culture of Paris between the world wars. His publishing activities connected modernist literary experimentation with the craftsmanship and limited editions favored by private-press collectors. MEDIEVAL ROMANCE & MODERNIST PARIS. Although Titus is particularly associated with expatriate literary circles, 'The Legend of Ermengarde' illustrates another aspect of his publishing interests: the revival of earlier European literary traditions through carefully produced editions. The book is consequently of interest not only as a work of medievalist literature but also as an example of the wider range of publications produced by the Paris expatriate presses. THE TROUBADOUR REVIVAL AND A POSSIBLE LITERARY MYSTIFICATION. Drawing upon the medieval Occitan tradition of courtly love and chivalric devotion, 'The Legend of Ermengarde' reflects the revival of medieval literature in interwar Paris. Although presented as a translation of a Provençal work attributed to the obscure Uc Saine, bibliographical scholarship suggests that 'Homer Rignaut' was a pseudonym and that the poem may be a modern imitation rather than an authentic medieval text. This uncertainty adds a dimension of literary experimentation to an already distinctive Paris private-press publication.
