The Legend of The Devil's Dyke. As related by Master Cisbury Oldfirle, Schoolmaster of Poynings. Published by The Dyke Hotel in Brighton. Undated - early part of The 20th Century. Size: A booklet 3 1/4 x 4 1/4. Page number 29. Soft cover. The boards are greenish brown card with a motif on the front that suggests it is produced in the earlier decades of the last century. The contents relate the arrival of a demon into Sussex who, with his pick axe and spade attempts to flood the valley with sea water. The scar of the landscape that is The Dyke is what remains of the devastation he wrought by the fiend before he is prevented from completing the task by the intercession of Saint Cuthbert and the recluse Sister Ursula. Condition: Fine. The covers of the booklet are scarcely marked - just one tiny spot on the front . The corners are not bumped or rubbed. The contents are clean though the staples have rusted.
