The author, an experienced clergyman, emphasizes the critical importance of personal holiness, arguing that it is the cornerstone of a successful ministry. Drawing on both Scripture and historical examples, the book delves into the various dangers and difficulties that clergy may encounter, including over-familiarity with religious practices, excessive secular responsibilities, narrow-mindedness, and an overwhelming workload. Pastoral Counsel in an Age of Doubt delivers a practical, faith‑friendly guide for ministers and lay readers navigating modern doubt.
Based on lectures given at Cambridge Divinity School in 1883, it explores how to speak to skepticism with clarity, compassion, and conviction. The book examines the state of belief across society and offers thoughtful approaches for pastors, teachers, and informed laypeople. It blends reflection on the nature of faith with concrete guidance for ministry, aiming to help readers understand doubt without surrendering core gospel truths. What you’ll experience
- Considerations on how doubt and inquiry affect faith in today’s world.
- Strategies for addressing unbelief with moral, rather than merely intellectual, remedies.
- Discussion of how to engage with people from different social classes in a respectful, constructive way.
- Practical reflections on how faith can endure testing and emerge stronger.
