Print on Demand. This book is a rich collection of essays and speeches by the author, a veteran of fifteen years in Parliament. It begins with reflections on the long-established routines of that institution, which have changed little since the author first entered the House of Commons in the 1880s. Yet the author's vivid account of parliamentary procedure, laced with anecdotes about famous politicians of the day, captures a moment in British history when the political landscape was changing rapidly. The author's frontline observations on important debates and events in Parliament—such as the dispute over Charles Bradlaugh’s right to swear an oath, or the passage of the second Home Rule Bill—offer a valuable insight into one of the most turbulent eras of British politics. This book is of value to anyone interested in politics, British history, or parliamentary procedure. It will appeal to general readers and scholars alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

- Biography and Autobiography
A readable series of lectures on Milton, the great hymnists, and the women who shaped English religious poetry.
This edition invites readers to explore ideas, lives, and legacies in engaging, accessible prose. It surveys key figures from Milton to modern hymn writers and highlights the enduring impact of their work.
Across centuries, the lectures trace how poets and hymn-writers influenced English religious life. Biographical sketches blend with short, memorable quotations, drawing a vivid map of literary and spiritual currents. The book situates Milton alongside hymn writers like Charles Wesley, John Newton, Keble, and Heber, and it also highlights the contributions of women who shaped the tradition.
- Readable introductions to Milton’s prose and poetry and the licensing debates that shaped his era
- Profiles of major hymn writers and their most enduring contributions
- Notes on women authors whose hymns and verses left a lasting mark
- Quotes and context that illuminate the landscape of English religious poetry
Ideal for readers of literary history, religious poetry, and the story of how English hymnody evolved across centuries.
