Item description from seller

Whitman's most famous work, with an Introduction by fellow poet Carl Sandburg. Orig. appearing in a Modern Library Edition in 1921, but with a different illustrator (see our listing #023633), this is the first edition in he Illustrated Modern Library series, in 410 pages with Index of First Lines & About the Artist in rear, blank endpapers. Hardcover 12mo has quarter green cloth over boards covered in pastel decorative green paper, with red ML title box to spine, edged & lettered in bright gilt. Condition is Good, downgraded because both front & rear hinges are cracked & there is significant rubbing to extremities. Text block is strong & straight, & all the lovely watercolor illustrations are present & perfect. Pages moderately tanned, but completely unmarked save for former owner's blindstamped ownership circle to half-title page. Clear thick mylar DJ lettered in black & brown to front cover is Poor: mostly all there, but with a tear to lower spine, 2 missing chips to top edge of front cover, entire top 2" of back cover missing. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received Weekdays by 2pm (Pacific time); later orders, weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.…
