Knowing what Visual Studio Code can do is one thing. Using it confidently while working on real coding tasks is another.
Learn Visual Studio Code Step by Step helps you bridge that gap through guided exercises, practical projects, and everyday development workflows designed to turn knowledge into hands-on experience.
Whether you have completed an introduction to VS Code or already know the basics, this book gives you a structured way to practice essential skills, solve common development problems, and become more comfortable working on coding projects.
Learn by DoingThrough practical activities and project-based learning, you will explore how to:
- Set up a project workspace: Organize files and folders and prepare your environment for development.
- Practice efficient editing: Apply keyboard shortcuts, IntelliSense, search, navigation, and code-editing techniques.
- Customize your workflow: Configure settings and use relevant extensions to support specific tasks.
- Write and run code: Work through guided coding activities and learn how to execute programs in your development environment.
- Debug common problems: Set breakpoints, inspect variables, follow program execution, and investigate errors systematically.
- Work confidently in the terminal: Practice commands and common tasks used throughout the development process.
- Use Git in everyday work: Track changes, create commits, and understand how branches support development.
- Explore collaboration workflows: Learn the fundamentals of working with branches, remotes, and shared repositories.
- Improve project quality: Practice testing, troubleshooting, and organizing code for easier maintenance.
- Bring your skills together: Apply what you have learned in a guided project that combines several essential VS Code features.
- Create a repeatable workflow: Develop a practical routine you can adapt to future coding projects.
Rather than treating each feature as an isolated tool, this book encourages you to connect the pieces. You will practice moving between the editor, terminal, debugger, and source control tools as you work through common development tasks.
The goal is not simply to follow instructions. It is to understand the process, recognize useful tools, and build the confidence to apply your skills to your own projects.

- Readers who have completed an introductory guide
- Students learning how to manage programming projects

Practice the tools. Solve problems. Build with confidence.
Take the next step toward using Visual Studio Code more effectively—one exercise and one project at a time.
