About this title
Rather than resorting to the typically dry style of the usual computer manual, Smiley uses a running commentary in his text, presenting the subject as if he were reporting on a day spent with a class of students. And it works a treat.
Combining this chatty approach with a project to build an application for a fictitious china shop, Smiley creates a comfortable atmosphere in which to inform and does a great job of tackling the basics of Microsoft's highly popular language in a patient and accessible way which teaches the ins and outs of the language and development environment without treating the reader like an idiot.
Topic coverage includes how to install the supplied version of the tool, how to plan projects from start to end, debugging and, of course, the nitty-gritty of producing working programs incorporating all the functionality Windows can offer.
Those with previous programming experience may do better with something a little more complex, but for the absolute beginner looking to break into the world of programming with Visual Basic there are few resources which can top this one.
